You know those moments in life that make you sit back and take in how far you’ve come? Laikonik just had one of those moments. People always say it’s an honour just to be nominated, so when we were up for the 2016 Life Instyle Australian Made award for our signature Once A Year Book collection, honoured we were.
But to actually win the category (against many other incredible local talent, it must be said) at the Gala Gift & Life Instyle Awards, well, we were humbled.

A little history lesson: Laikonik first found its feet a decade ago hawking our wares at market stalls with the talented founder Kasia Jaquot and the Once A Year Book was our special thing, our USP, as it were.
The unique concertina design was conceived so the Once A Year Book could be displayed or stored as required, a memento of a child’s life. Over the years it has evolved to have broader appeal, to be the showcase for a wedding, holiday, relationship or moment… but it remains as it always has been: a dedication to visual storytelling.
And that was long before the proliferation of smartphone photography and Instagram. Which, fortuitously, makes our Once A Year Books even more special. It seems we take so many photos these days for social media feeds and posterity, but rarely take the time to properly enjoy and showcase them.
What value is a photograph if it disappears in a news feed, never to be seen or enjoyed again? The Once A Year Book encourages memories to be savoured.
To have the Life Instyle judges acknowledge the vision, work and quality that goes into this product is very special indeed. Nominees were assessed on design innovation/originality, quality, commercial viability, presentation and packaging and wow factor.
And we came out on top. So excuse us for the blatant back patting. But quite frankly, we’re as proud as punch.
A big thank you goes out to Laura Blythman for our stunning cover illustrations, a collab which I loved. Our amazing letter press printers at Chapel Press, who love a good challenge and always come though with amazing results. Beautifully photographed by Bonny Iris.
